This is probably one of my more “traditional” comic gags. I don’t usually set up simple gags like this. I wish I did, but I don’t. Most of the time, my gags are more story based and have a little more character development- which in the comic strip world spells overly wordy and crowded panels! BUT, this one, is structured like a Hagar the Horrible gag; which is nice and simple. The gag itself came to me when I thought about how we, as parents, punish our kids today as opposed to how we were punished when we were kids. I like that Melody also gets to be more the star in this one. I can’t be the first one to come up with this gag though. I’m sure I subliminally stole it from Hagar the Horrible.

Ohhhhh I get it! I was really confused until I read the description. The cell phones belong to the two reading. I thought they belonged to the younger two and time out was sitting next to their phones going off or something. So it was confusing until I got the connection.
Do you have a Character’s page at all? I’d love to see more info on the crew in the comics and details about each one. There are four girls and the mom and dad, yes?
Sorry if it was confusing. I may need to rework the gag. Yes, there’s an “About Outnumbered” link at the top, just under the banner.
I really like your work, Mr. Bancroft. I bet this one would be more understandable if the twins were not in the corner with the phones. Just a thought. Then you wouldn’t have to stress the idea of “all” and just stress the idea of “I thought the kids were in trouble.” Funny idea. Thank you for putting it out here.
That’s a good suggestion. I’ve had some get confused on this gag.
Glad to lend a hand. 🙂
“I sublimely stole it from Hagar the Horrible.” Um, didn’t you mean to say “subliminally?”
Yes, John, that’s what I meant. Make me feel bad!
Hey Tom –
Are you doing this on a Cintiq or tablet? I assume that you scanned in or found some benday dots for the shading. Kind of a neat choice, but have you thought about coloring them? Nowadays, when you read the daily strips on gocomics or yahoo comics, they go ahead and color most of them. It’s pretty rare to see a B&W anymore.
Your old CalArts bud-

Hey Tony. No, I’m hand inking them, then scanning them in and adding the gradiant dots, balloons/lettering and such. I wanted to have originals, so that’s why. Yeah, I’m realizing that it not being in color is different. Weird that you’re the first to mention it though. If I go bigger, I’ll go to color. I’ll need someone to help out at that point though. Not a fast colorist.
