Well, you may have noticed that I chose to hand letter the words and hand do the balloons. I usually do them in Photoshop after drawing the strip. I wouldn’t call this a success, but I know I can do better so I may try it again. Do you have an opinion on hand lettered or font usage in strips? Hopefully you can still make out the words to the hilarious gag.

Or “Prison.”
WAIT! Did I Just TYPE That?!!?
SORRY, Honey! Just Kidding!!
(GULP)
It wasn’t ME! I”m running right now.
Harping and tooting
We two do our share.
In the deck, King and Queen,
Lead and follow. What a pair! 🙂
WOw, that’s impressive! Thanks Rhonda.
I prefer hand lettering to fonts. There’s something more organic to hand lettering. Fonts can come across as sterile. I also think that lettering is another part of the style of the comic strip. So the hand lettering becomes and added personal feature of the strip by the artist.
I use a lettering guide (one of those old timey Alvin ames ones) to put down guide lines otherwise my lettering is all wonkey.
I agree! Fonts can be difficult to work with some art styles. I thought the font you’ve been using works well, but I really like how the hand-lettering looks in this one! And you had to hand-letter the “AAAAH” at the end of yesterday’s strip probably anyway! 🙂
I find that making a layer with line guides in Photoshop helps to keep things straignt. And making the space between lines (leading) about half of the height of the tallest letters (if that makes sense).
Thanks for the encouragement. I’ll try it again.
I dig the hand-written lettering, gives the comic a more indie feel, while the fonts give it a more polished professional and established. They both look great; the former resonates with me more than the latter, but again, they both look stellar.
Love how you did Mark’s eyes in the last panel. Nice touch.
Haha! “Full-time, live-in tutor.” Which is true, especially for kids. Parents are pretty much their first teachers.
Huh. Seriously, if you hadn’t mentioned you hand drew words and the bubbles, I wouldn’t have noticed the difference. IT’S THAT GOOD! 😀
Well, that makes me feel good. I don’t believe you, since this is pretty sloppy, but I appreciate the comment!
HAND LETTERING FOREVER!!!
Thanks Wes. I just have to put a little more effort into it. That first panel is straight up crooked!
